Vought RF-8 Crusader
The RF-8 Crusader was a photo-reconnaissance development and operated longer in U.S. service than any of the fighter versions. RF-8s played a crucial role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, providing essential low-level photographs impossible to acquire by other means. US Naval Reserve units continued to operate the RF-8 until 1987.

RF-8 Crusader in Flight Photos
As time passes, the methods of historical preservation must be updated. The events in these photos were captured on 35 mm film, a great format for image capture, but poor by today’s standards for broadcast. It is my wish to share these rare historical images with the world. By creating interesting photo compilations of every possible angle, it is my intent to release these new images that show historical moments from another perspective.
This collection of photos are very rare, it is a miracle that we are able to see them. Please enjoy the few minutes that you spare to look at historical events in what amounts to an unbelievable technical event.

RF 100 400 for LANDSCAPES..? This might be my favourite lens!
Ok, Hear me out! when you're looking through a zoom lens at landscapes you can get really creative with what frame you wish to capture. the RF100-400mm lens from canon is so light and versatile that in this video i ended up shooting every-shot with it. I didn't start out with the intention to do so but in this video you'll see photographs from an epic sunset in the rockies and what this lens allowed me to zoom right in on.

Being limited run type of kit you have to take it into account when you build the model: There is no part numbers in the sprue, there are injection ejector marks that has to be removed before parts fit etc. But the instructions are the worst part of the kit, but as there are not a lot of parts you can figure the kit out. But I would have liked the instructions to have mentioned which of all the options (there are all the lumbs and bumbs to make every RF-8) you should use with each decal option. Although there are no locator pins, after you have done all the fiddly small inside parts the rest goes together very nicely. The most of the filler goes to intake, other parts that needed filler were some alignment issues I made myself.
After all I was very happy with the kit and I make the RF-8A version next with knowledge of this and with some twist. Sword can make any packaging with these plastics and I can see myself buying for example Project Bullet and final flight versions if they decide to make such...

Welcome to “The Dad Project”.
First off, this one has taken a bit longer than usual as work obligations and some minor health issues invaded my free time. In any case I'm back...
In this installement my dad, Pete Purvis, will continue his relationship with the F-8 as he flies the most beautifully proportioned camera ever made--the Vought RF-8 Crusader.
His initial introduction would be at the Naval Test Center at Patuxent River, Maryland. Pretty much a damp and humid backwater, not too far away from DC, Pax River joined with the Chesapeake Bay to give a relatively unhindered and open playground to test aircraft following World War Two.
With his recent retirment from the Navy my dad made his way into the Reserves and for more years than he spent on active duty he would be a weekend warror.
With his assignment to fly the RF-8 he would leave the Navy having chased subs in the S2F, trained as a test pilot, flying the F-4 in war, testing a generational fighter, the F-14, and finally flying a very fast, very expensive camera.
Good fortune would find him assigned to several flying billets. It would culminate for him as the skipper of VFP-1106, a reserve RF-8G squadron flying out of Andrews AFB outside DC.
His time flying for Uncle Sam would end following that duty. He always appreciated that it ended with this sexy beast--a sexy beast that he had had a relationship with for nearly fifteen years.
This is my effort to tell my dad’s story through the planes he flew. His first flight was on November 8th, 1957, and his last was on September 10, 1998.
I had hoped that my dad would be on camera telling me these stories, but he died recently, so I am telling his story for him. I have his autobiography, his flight logs that tells a precise story of landings and takeoffs that should equal the other except for one fateful flight on June 20th, 1973. More on that in a future installment
If I am successful, “The Dad Project” will span a minimum of thirty-eight installments. One installment for each type of plane he flew. From the antiquated DC-6B to the wonders and exhilaration of the F-14.
A bit about me—
https://onemorevoiceinthewilderness.wordpress.com/2009/08/06/the-epiphany/
And for the camera and equipment geeks out there—
The video was shot on the OMD EM-1 III with the Olympus 17mm 1.2 lens sitting atop a Giotto MH1301 Ball Head attached to the iFootage RB-A200 Cobra 2 22" Round-Base Monopod. In addition I used the Rhino ROV Pro for the tracking shot of the books.
Recorded with an Audio Technica AT 897 through the Atomos Ninja V Monitor. Video recorded with the Ninja V Monitor. Took me a while to remember, too, my Parrot Teleprompter (fantastic piece of kit).
Lights used—Pixel G1s RGB Video Light, Viltrox L116T and a Neewer CB60 60W LED Video Light with Softbox.
The video is put together with Adobe Premiere Pro and the Tour Box Neo.
